## 1. Use the Flip Out LCD Screen

The first way is if your DSLR has a flip out LCD screen on the back, which most of the lower end models do, is to turn that screen back toward you. Then, when the screen is turned toward you, before hitting record, position the magnifying rectangle on where your face will be when you're in front of the camera, hit the zoom in button to go 5x and 10x on the image, and then go stand in place.

You can then just reach out and adjust the focus on the lens till you get it dialed in right or just move forward and backward until you're perfectly in focus.

## 2. Use an External Remote with Auto-Focus

Building off using the LCD screen, instead of having to manually focus the camera once you're in front of it, just position the magnifying rectangle on your face like before and then using an external wireless remote, like the Canon RC-6, which runs about $20 dollars, hit the record button with the lens set to AF.

The camera will autofocus on you then start recording. Then you can switch the lens back to manual focus.

## 3. Use a Stand-In

The easiest way to focus the camera is if you're behind it, but to make sure you're gonna be in focus when you set in front of it, you'll need a pretend you.

The best option is a friend, coworker or spouse that is the same height as you, but if you don't have one of them handy, the second best option is to use an exposure/white balance card, like this Impact QuikBalance Collapsible 12" Gray Panel and attach it to an extra light stand using something like a spring clip.

I've also heard of people using a paper plate with a smily face on it taped to a broom stick and propping that against a chair. Hey, this is DIY Video Guy, so sometimes you gotta get creative I guess.

## 4. Use an External Monitor

The fourth, final and my favorite way to make sure I'm properly in focus, exposed, and framed is to use an external monitor. Now, you'll need an HDMI out on your camera if you want to use this, but if you have one, it is well worth it to do this.

To me, there are three kinds of external monitors.

First, the cheap option. For $150 to $200 on Amazon you can get cheap LCD monitor and position that in front of you, like the Lilliput 7-inch one.

Next, there are really nice LCD monitors from companies like Small HD & Atomos. These will set you back anywhere from $600 to $1000.

And lastly, you have TV's and computer monitors. Go with a small computer monitor if you need portability, but if you want a nice permanent solution, mount an extra TV on the way behind the camera, right above where you're looking. I just put one up in this studio and it really helps when I'm shooting by myself.

## Once you're in focus...

And now, real quick, once you're in focus.

1. Switch the lens to manual focus
2. Mark the spot on the ground you need to stand, or where the chair legs need to go, with tape
3. Mark the spot on the ground where the tripod is for next time, with tape
4. Mark the spot on the lens that your focus is at, with wax or tape
