Fixing your videos that are too dark or too bright is pretty easy when you know what to do. In this video I'm going to show you how to fix exposure while shooting videos and which settings you need to change on your camera.

Back when all videos where shot on film you had to use a light meter to determine how bright the lighting was and read what settings to set your camera to based on the read out.

Now, light meters are built-in to our cameras and help give us a quick reading of whether or not an image is properly exposed.

Before hitting record, look at that bottom of your LCD screen.

(In the middle you'll see your camera's light meter. If the meter is in the middle, your camera thinks it is properly exposed. Too far to the right and it is overexposed. Too far to the left and it is underexposed.)

Now, I go into more detail on aperture, shutter speed, and ISO in my free book at diyvideoguy.com/exposure, but for now, just know that to change exposure the main two settings to change will be aperture and ISO.

Aperture will change how much is in focus, but that can be a quick way to dial in exposure. If you're already at the aperture you want to be shooting with (let's say 4.0 for example), then just change the ISO up or down until your light meter shows the image is properly exposed.

If you're coming from photography background, you may be familiar with judging exposure based on a histogram.

A histogram summarizes brightness values for an entire image: luminance on a scale of 0 to 256 horizontally from darkness on the left to light on the right. It then shows how much of the image has that luminance vertically. This can also be viewed in individual red, green, and blue channels.

Even better than a histogram for shooting video if your camera has one is a waveform monitor, which shows you the luminance of each vertical segment, going left to right across the image.

You can pull up one of these on your camera in video mode by pressing the display or info buttons. Now you get way more detail about the brightness and exposure of your image in comparison to the built-in light meter.

Change your aperture or ISO as needed to move the graphs left or right and properly exposure your image, with the majority, if not all of the graph in the middle and not clipped off at the ends.
